Union City, California, -- Zypcom, Inc. announces two new 33.6Kbps (V.34/V.34+) high-speed dual modem cards for the Z32-CH chassis - the Z34-RX and the Z34-RE. Like the Z34-SX, its standalone counterpart, the Z34-RX targets buyers who need 33.6Kbps and faster data transfer speeds for both dial-up and 2-/4-wire leased-line applications. In leased line operation, the Z34-RX provides dial backup with auto line restoral. The Z34-RE is the rackmount equivalent of the Z34-SE standalone modem, and operates on dial and 2-wire leased lines. Both the Z34-RX and Z34-RE are flash-upgradeable, so the latest software enhancements may be downloaded with ease. The powerful datapump in the modems allows for fast and accurate data compression, resulting in an overall throughput of up to 230.4Kbps. With their dual modem design, up to 32 modems (16 cards) may be housed in a single chassis. The selector card occupies slot 17, and the modem cards may be individually addressed using this selector card terminal port. Zypcom's corporate-class modems are designed for data communications professionals, and can be used across MS-DOS- and Windows-based PCs, Apple Macintosh systems, Unix workstations, AS/400 minicomputers and LAN communications servers and routers.

Both modems offer compatibility with all applicable ITU-T and Bell standards, including V.34/V.34+, V.32bis, V.32, V.22bis, V.23, V.22, V.21, 212A, and 103 for data transfers. Both modems also include compatibility with the public domain's V.32terbo modulation scheme. Error correction and data compression support cover MNP Classes 2-5, as well as V.42 and enhanced (8:1) V.42bis. Facsimile support includes Group III, V.17, V.29, V.27ter and V.33. And from a software interface point of view, the modems support V.25bis and Hayes-AT-compatible autodialer commands and EIA-578/592 Classes 1 and 2 for fax software compatibility. The Z34-RX and Z34-RE support fixed-speed and autobaud data transfers at speeds ranging from 300 bps to 230.4Kbps. Line rates range from 300 bps to 33.6Kbps and offer autorate fallback/fall-forward capabilities. With enhanced V.42bis data compression for 8-to-1 throughput gains, compressed throughput speeds can reach 230.4Kbps.

Both modems include features that data communications professionals demand-features not typically found on value-priced modems. For example, the Z34-RX and Z34-RE are compatible with Zypcom's Z3200E Network Management Controller. Additional corporate-class features include callerID, memory access security and remote control. They also provide network managers with the flexibility needed to deal with large IS installations where it is important to be able to run diagnostics remotely, change modem options and pull down modem and line performance statistics.

The Z34-RX, which operates over both dial-up and 2-/4-wire leased lines, also performs the automatic dial backup and call restoral functions required in mission-critical, leased-line applications. When a leased line is severed, the modem will automatically reconnect at the same speed via a single dial-up line. The Z34-RX can also automatically restore the dedicated leased line connection when it is repaired.

The Z34-RE operates over dial and 2-wire leased lines, and is functionally different from the Z34-RX only in that it does not support 4-wire leased line operation.

The Z34-RX modem includes one of the most generous warranties in all of the computer business. For two full years after purchase, Zypcom will provide a new unit in exchange for a faulty one within 24 hours of the product's failure, with shipping prepaid by Zypcom. The Z34-RE has a two year, return-to-factory warranty.

The Z34-RX and Z34-RE modem cards are housed in Zypcom's Z32-CH chassis, which mounts in a standard 19" equipment rack. This 16 slot chassis accommodates up to 16 cards for a total of 32 modem ports, and is available in AC or 48VDC, single or dual redundant power. The modem cards are hot-swappable. The modem selector card, which ships as standard with the chassis, occupies slot 17, or for full network management, the Z3200E network management controller card slides into slot 17 instead of the standard selector card. The Z3200E will work with any existing SNMP management software, for example, HP OpenView, or with ZSNMP, Zypcom's own SNMP software. Thus, the Z32-CH may be configured as a basic modem pool or as an advanced network access system.

All products are available now. The Z34-RX dual modem card has a list price of $1,498 while the Z34-RE is $998. The single AC power Z32CH has a list price of $1,200; the dual AC power Z32CH-2 lists for $2,100; the single 48VDC power Z32CH-48 lists for $1,350 and the dual DC power has a list price of $2,400. The Z3200E network management controller card lists for $1,299 and the ZSNMP software is $799.

Zypcom was founded in 1991 to develop, manufacture and market hardware and software for wide-area-network data communications applications.
